1) Relate Film to Class Discussion
This is a film written and directed by Orson Wells who also starred in it. It is named the best American film of all time. When it was first released in 1941 it was considered a commercial failure and almost wasn't even released. Wells had so much control with this film and was never granted that type of control ever again. The movie follows the death of Charles Kane and trying to figure out what his last word "Rosebud" means. It shows an interview type of style as people who were about of Kane are interviewed. As they are interviewed we are given flashbacks of important times of Kane's life.
2) Article on Film

This article talks about the origin of the film and the symbolism as rosebud. The character of Kane is loosely based off WR Hearst, regarding his accomplishments, house, and personal life. WR Hearst was not amused and almost got the film to not even be released.Throughout the film everyone is trying to figure out the word for Rosebud. Hearst, whom the film is based h on is believed to have used Rosebud as word for his wife's genitalia. Here it is not the case and refers to Kane's childhood memory. It shows how child memories are more real and memorable than adult memories.
3) Relate Article to Film
In the film the mystery of Rosebud is the main thing that keeps it going. They don't let us find it out until the very end and they show us in an interesting way. After we see them cleaning his house in the end we see them throwing away his old memoribilia and throwing them into the fire place to burn.We then see his childhood sled with the name of Rosebud on it. This causes us to think and reflect on the entire film based on the single last second of the movie.
4) Critical Analysis of film.
I have had mixed emotions about this film. As it started out it seemed to be a little boring to me but once it got to the interviews it started to be entertaining. I do enjoy a good mystery and found myself stumped trying to figure out what Rosebud was. Upon finding out what it was I was like really thats what the whole mystery was about? a sled?. After reflecting on it I do understand the purpose of his childhood memory but still am unsure why that would be his last word spoken. Overall it was a good ilm and introduced the interview style to us that we see so much of today in the industry.
